Kaleidoscope IV – HANDS International Drumming Festival 2014: Drumming Nation

Synopsis

‘Drumming Nation’ is the 4th installation to HANDS Percussion’s International Drumming Festival, Kaleidoscope. After 3 successful runs, it is clear that drumming and percussion is enjoyed by all kinds of people. It has the potential to unite a community through the enjoyment of creative music. Malaysia is rich in diversity of people, cultures and music. However, in current sometimes uncertain times, that diversity needs to be unified more than ever. The young especially need to be encouraged into positive activities. As a disciplined creative force, HANDS believe that its art, practices and beliefs can effect a positive change.

Drawing on the 28-year foundation of the 24 Festive Drums Style, listed as a national cultural heritage in February 2009, HANDS has what it takes to make a difference. There is little surprise then, coupled with a rich drumming culture in Malaysia that Kaleidoscope IV is named ‘Drumming Nation’. An annual international festival like Kaleidoscope, a hub for diversity in drums, percussions and music, would showcase Malaysia at its best. It would also draw tourists to Malaysia just like tourists are drawn to the yearly Glastonbury in the UK, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the US, Bali Arts Festival in Indonesia or to the Taiwan International Percussion Conference (TIPC) in Taiwan.
